A recent analysis from Metehan Yeşilyurt, co -founder and Chief Growth Officer at AEO Vision, reveals information on how confusion can rank content.
Knowing about potential confusion factors means you can now shape your content to improve the chances of being quoted.
Before we get into what you can do to optimize your content for confusion AI, let’s go over what metehan found.
How does confusion content rank?
Confusion uses a three-layer (L3) conversion system for searches related to devices (people, organizations, places, etc.), according to Metehan’s research.
Here’s how it works:
- The original results are picked up and scores
- The surrounding layer improves the quality of the results
- The result kit may be discarded if it does not meet quality benchmarks
And here is a deeper look at some specific confusion factors that Metehan identified:
- Freshly published or updated content gets a significant ranking increase
- Content associated with domains approved as authoritative of confusion can see more quotes
- User engagement with new content affects strongly future ranking potential
Based on Metehan’s research, it seems that confusion weighs recency and user interaction patterns more in its source selection process than Google does.
For example, imagine that you wrote a detailed blog post about “Electric Vehicle Battery Innovations” that confusion picks up when a user searches for “Latest EV battery breakthrough.” As it closely mirrors the quick language.
Before showing your article, confusion uses the change level that evaluates your content against other factors.
If your post did not get very early traction and have not been updated recently, there is a very real option that confusion will exclude it from the results.
5 TIP for creating and optimizing content for confusion AI
How to create content with the best chance to earn quotes in confusion:
1. Choose with high performance items
Perplexity’s ranking system prioritizes content in specific categories, so writing about certain topics that Prepplexity considers high value (as business/analysis) gives you a better chance of being discovered and quoted.
Metehan’s analysis notes, “Content in top-level categories receives exponentially more visibility than standard topics.”
So if you want to increase the rankings of confusion, you may want to consider writing pieces about topics related to AI, technology/innovation, science/research and business/analysis.
For example, you can create a piece of comments on AI use in your niche. Or publish a report with research that your business has done. Our study of whether chatgpt -adoption affects Google’s popularity covers both.
2. Include semantic keywords in your content
Including semantic keywords (related expression) helps perplexitys AI to match your content for user queries.
For example, an article on “E -mail -Marketing Automation” may include related terms such as “Drip campaigns”, “Behavior Releases”, “Lead Care” and “Conversion Winds.”
Here are some more tips:
- Include both technical terms and ordinary synonyms naturally (ie “Content Management System” and “Website Platform”)
- Addresses multiple sub -settings in your main theme
- Connect your subject to related concepts through clear explanations
- Use Question-and-Svar patterns that mirror how users are actually looking
Find semantically related keywords with Semrush’s keyword magic tools. Enter your item keywords, adjust your country (optional), and click “Search. ”

Click “Related“To find related keywords. And consider using the keyword group filter on the left to drill down to specific items.

Then write content and include your selected semantic keywords.
The key to using semantic keywords is natural integration. Keyword filling (forced keywords within the text) creates unnatural language patterns. And can actually hurt your performance.
Instead, write as an expert who naturally uses the full range of relevant terminology.
3. Reference & join in content from Perplexity’s trusted domains
Metehan’s research shows that confusion maintains a manually curated list of reputable domains that may affect locations, so referring to content from them or being mentioned in them can improve your visibility in confusion search results.
The trusted domains appear to adapt to what you would expect. For example, sources such as Booking.com and Airbnb as reputable in the travel area are seen.
That said, the full list of manually approved domains is not published.
You can get a sense of what domains confusion favors by searching for niche-related topics and noting what domains confusion often refers to.
On a client’s web site, SEO consultant Ross Kernez began adding links to some of the trusted sources Metehan discovered. And tripled the number of times the site’s developer content was shown in confusion response.
“In developer-focused articles, we began to include GitHub Code pieces from popular Open Source projects relevant to the subject. Instead of summarizing documentation ourselves, we directly linked to the GITHUB repos and incorporated problems or discussions from these projects.”
Ross did something similar for another type of content:
“For our content of consumer technology and product review, we started adding links to Amazon product pages, customer reviews and Reddit discussions to back up what we said.”
4. Write convincing metatitles and descriptions
Writing enticing title marks and meta descriptions encourage people to click on your quote within Perplexity’s output to increase the chances of establishing long -term visibility.
Why? Because Metehan’s research shows that early engagement is important. And users do not have much beyond the quotation excerpt (which can display your title brand and meta description) to inform their decision on whether your content is worth their interaction.

Make sure your titles contain your keyword and are accurate. Users also need to know what your content is about from the title alone.
And your meta descriptions should give users a preview of your content. And what they get by clicking on it from confusion.
5. Build the current authority
Confusion can reward places that demonstrate extensive subject expertise. So covering all angles on a topic can help you rank higher. It seems that confusion does not evaluate the content in isolation.
Instead, it is considering how your content connects to existing articles and what collective expertise your site shows that this sees this in action.
Here are some of the sources confusion shows for a user looking for advice on how to train a puppy to sit. American Kennel Club appears twice. Because they have written several articles that cover different angles on this topic.

The American Kennel Club also surpasses all its most important competitors when we look at how much traffic Semrush’s AI traffic panel estimates are driving from confusion.

A great way to build topical authority is to create subject clusters.
A topic cluster contains a column side (main side) covering a wide topic and more cluster pages (spages) covering more specific angles. And they are all connected through internal links.
For example, a blog post for the key word “What is LLMS” may connect to other blog posts about Chatgpt, Google’s AI mode and confusion. Like this:

Semrush’s Key Word Strategy Highlights automatically creates column sides and subpages for you.
Once you have entered a few seed key words (main topics), you get lists of column sides and subpages.

Create content for these topics – and connect between related pages – to potentially improve quotes in confusion.
