Washington calls on Israel to fight these groups “extremists” accused of inciting violence. On Wednesday, August 28, the United States announced new sanctions targeting Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. “Extremist settler violence in the West Bank is causing intense human suffering, harming Israel’s security and undermining prospects for peace and stability in the region”State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.
“It is important that the Israeli government holds the individuals and entities responsible for violence against civilians in the West Bank accountable”he added. This announcement comes on the same day that the Israeli army launched a large-scale military operation in the northern part of the occupied West Bank, which it said killed nine Palestinian fighters.
