Twin tunnels that will help increase the efficiency and capacity of New York City’s rail connections. That will be achieved by Lane, the US subsidiary of the Webuild group, which won a contract for a total of 427 million euros, including 35 percent from Lane, for the construction of the Palisades tunnel in New Jersey. , in the United States. The contract – according to a memo – is the first tunnel awarded by the Gateway Development Commission (GDC) as part of the larger Hudson River Tunnel Project (HTP), which involves the construction of a new tunnel between New York and New Jersey and the maintenance of a tunnel that has existed for over 114 years. The Palisades Tunnel is one of three separate tunnels that will make up the HTP, along with the Hudson River Tunnel and the Manhattan Tunnel. The project, identified as “Palisades Tunnel Project 1A,” involves the design and construction of two twin rail tunnels, each measuring approximately 1 mile in length and having an inside diameter of approximately 8 meters. For the excavation, we will use 2 Tbm, large mechanical moles, which will gradually advance underground. The contract also includes construction of the tunnel’s west portal near the Tonnelle Avenue construction site in northern Bergen, six cross-connection tunnels and a shaft in Hoboken, Hudson County.

This shaft, which is just over 36 meters deep and almost 37 meters wide, will be used to remove the tunnel boring machines from the basement once their journey is complete. The work will be carried out in joint venture with the Schiavone and Dragados companies and completed in 2027. The Webuild group is a world leader in underground excavation, with a history that includes the construction of more than 3,400 kilometers of tunnels. In the United States, under Lake Mead, on the outskirts of Las Vegas, the group implemented the Intake 4 project, which was supposed to restore water to the gaming metropolis, with the construction of a record-breaking hydraulic tunnel of more than 200 kilometers. dug at a height of 2.0 meters in the center of the lake. In Australia, Webuild is currently participating in the construction of the Snowy 64 hydroelectric project, digging a complex system of underground tunnels using innovative tunnel boring machines capable of continuing even with significant slopes. The group is also currently working on the Brenner Base Tunnel, under the Alps, between Italy and Austria, which when completed will be the longest underground rail link in the world at 100 kilometers long (including the Innsbruck hub).
